Farmdale Cottage

This project was a ground up new construction home, with new site work, pool, and guest house. Our client had a desire to build a new home that felt in concert with the existing neighborhood character, as opposed to the stark contrast many new home builds in the neighborhood provide.

We worked to create a home that could meet modern living and amenities, while still having the feel of one of the neighborhoods original homes. We chose to create an English revival cottage, which felt in-kind with the various eclectic revival styles present in the neighborhoods 1920’s origins. We opted to minimize the presence of the automobile, tucking parking out of the way, and create a home that was open and engaging to it’s users. The front of the home is graced with a sitting room with triple aspect windows, a garden with a mature magnolia tree, and a small porch. Roof forms were strategically stepped to minimize the bulk and appearance, allowing a much larger home to feel congruous with the smaller original homes.

The resulting home provides 4 bedroom suites, along with 2 main living areas, and a gracious kitchen and scullery. Natural materials were chosen for both the interior and exterior, including various wood elements, natural stones, ceramics, and plaster finishes.
